One Year To Go

The Presidential general election is exactly one year away. All 435 congressional districts will also be up, as well as 34 senatorial seats being up for grabs. 12 states will hold gubernatorial elections.

Of course, it seems like the candidates have been running for a year already, and in some cases, they have. A modern member of the house NEVER ceases campaigning, never ceases fundraising, for themselves and for their party.
Sadly we will probably see records fall again in the amount of money spent across all categories of public office. There is huge danger in how the massive amounts of money spent on advertising and campaigns is raised. Not only from known lobbying groups and contributors, but from the “dark” money that flows in thanks to SCOTUS decisions like Citizens United. According to an October 2014 NY Times article, 55% of all broadcast advertising dollars spent in the 2014 election cycle came from UNDISCLOSED SOURCES. How can this be allowed? You only have to look at the current state of affairs in D.C. to see the effects of this sort of mad dash for cash.

Change will not occur in our nation’s capitol by just putting a new face and new name into office. Change will come from changing the laws, and in some cases, possibly even changing the Constitution itself. These are changes that MUST come if we are to recover our government, to turn it back into a government truly “of the people, by the people, for the people.”
