Just a short commentary on what I have read from last night’s debate. Someone has already counted, and the word “war” was used 49 times during last nights debate. “World War III” was used five times.
If ANY of the people on the Republican debate stage win the Presidency we will see an increased commitment again in the Middle East. If we are to continue a never ending war — and make no mistake, a war on terror is a never ending war — and plunge tens of thousands of our military back into the Middle East, then by God we SHOULD do one of two things.
One, reinstate the draft. We can no longer be the nation guarded by less than 1%. EVERYONE, man and woman, should share the risk of going to war. No exceptions. If you have religious objections fine, we will find you a non combat role.
Or Two, raise taxes. The military, Guard and Reserve included, need to have full ride education benefits for as many degrees as they wish. They also need full health care–universal health care, no cost–for life. Maybe not if you do one tour. But if you see combat, and if you serve your 20 years, you are good. They also need a raise. No one risking their lives should make less than six figures while on active duty. The less than 1% should be making 1% money in my opinion.
Point is, if we go off to war, it should HURT. There should be SACRIFICE by all, not just by some. Maybe if that were the case, we wouldn’t be so quick to go off to war in the first place.
